The Pakistan Institute of International Affairs has become the national partner in Pakistan of DCAF, Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance, Geneva Switzerland, in September 2019.
DCAF- Geneva Centre for Security Sector Governance, is a Geneva-based institution that assists and encourages national partners to improve security sector governance through inclusive and participatory reforms based on respect for national ownership, in-depth knowledge of local context and comparative experience from different regions. DCAF’s partners include a wide range of security sector actors including governments, parliaments, civil society, international organizations, police, judiciary, intelligence agencies, border security services and military.
DCAF is establishing a network across the three sub-regions of South Asia, Southeast Asia and East Asia. For each sub-region, DCAF is engaging a Sub-regional SSG Associate (and Sub-regional Partner Institution) and for each country a SSG Associate (and the Partner institution) to further the goal of promoting good security sector governance in the Asia-Pacific region.
The Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program (TTCSP) at the Lauder Institute, University of Pennsylvania, conducts research on the role policy institutes play in governments and in civil societies around the world. On 22 January 2015, while evaluating South Asian think tanks via ‘2014 Global Go To Think Tank Index’ TTCSP considered 192 think tanks from India and 19 from Pakistan for inclusion in the index. Among these 211 only two Pakistani think tanks had the privilege of being included in the South Asia and Pacific region and The Pakistan Institute of International Affairs (PIIA) ranked at 16 while SDPI was at number 19.
The internationally known ‘Think Tanks and Civil Societies Program’ (TTCSP) at the University of Pennsylvania conducts enquiries on the role policy institutes play in governments and civil societies across the globe. TTCSP refers to such organizations as ‘think tanks’. TTCSP also categorizes the evolving role and character of public policy research organizations.
In 2011, The Pakistan Institute of International Affairs had been added as Asian partner of the well-known Agora Asia-Europe.
The Pakistan Institute of International Affairs promotes the scientific study of international politics, economics and jurisprudence. Since 1948, PIIA has been publishing its quarterly journal, Pakistan Horizon. PIIA is engaged in research within purview of its domain and has various publications to its credit. It organizes seminars lectures, round table discussions on important issues.
Dr Masuma Hasan, former Ambassador of Pakistan and former Cabinet Secretary to the Government of Pakistan, is the Chairperson of PIIA. Her perfectionist dynamism is the main spirit behind the independent orientation and progress of PIIA.
